PPGSAAM professors also participated in the project entitled “Development of multidiagnostic tools for the detection of bovine tuberculosis”, carried out in partnership with researchers from the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation-National Center for Research on Beef Cattle/MS. This project, which started in 2014, was funded by FUNDECT in the amount of R$ 205,000.00 and generated a technical notebook and two scientific articles published in journals A1 and A2.
In addition, partnerships with institutions in the region, including the Evandro Chagas Institute, the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation of the Eastern Amazon / PA, the Paraense Emílio Goeldi Museum, IBAMA, several municipalities in Pará have allowed the development of projects and collaborative work, such as Castanhal, São João da Ponta, Curuçá, Inhangapi, São Domingos do Capim, Santa Bárbara do Pará, Peixe-Boi and Viseu, in addition to the state of Pará Health Office.
Other actions aimed at improving the training of students and the integration between Graduate Programs were carried out, where PPGSAAM students did training and developed part of their dissertation projects in laboratories of other HEIs, such as USP, UFCG, UFRRJ and institutes research, such as the Evandro Chagas Institute (IEC) and the Emílio Goeldi Museum (MPEG). The MPEG team has strengthened collaboration ties by co-supervising a master's thesis and a doctoral dissertation at PPGSAAM.
In 2015 two doctoral students exchanged technical training at the Molecular Biology Laboratory of the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul, regarding cloning and phylogeny for use in their theses. In 2016, two professors underwent technical training at research institutions. A professor trained at FIOCRUZ / IOC, at the Trypanosomatid Biology Laboratory of the Reference Service on Taxonomy and Diagnosis of Wild Reservoirs of Leishmaniasis. The other professor went to UNESP / Botucatu to start a technical partnership with the research group coordinated by Professor Jayme Sousa Neto and from this partnership came the cooperation project that aims to study the metagenomics of the intestinal flora of wild barbers in the Eastern Amazon and its influence in the vectoring of Trypanosoma cruzi, the subject of a thesis by a doctoral student at PPGSAAM.
Other professors are ad hoc consultants for national and international journals and consultants for funding agencies such as the Foundation for the Support of Research and Scientific and Technological Development of Maranhão (FAPEMA), the Support Foundation for the Development of Education, Science and Technology of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul and Pernambuco Science and Technology Foundation (FACEPE).
International Cooperations
UFPA has encouraged the internationalization of Graduate Programs through the International Cooperation Support Program (PACI), which aims to encourage collaboration between Research Groups linked to the Graduate Programs of that institution and research groups from other Institutions of Higher Education (HEI) from abroad.
To date, PPGSAAM professors have approved four proposals by the PACI that made it possible to exchange with researchers from the University of Minnesota-USA, the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) -Spain, the Universidad Mayor de San Marcos-Peru and the University of Florida- USA. Researchers from these universities were at PPGSAAM giving lectures, doing field activities and preparing research projects together with the Program's professors and students.
In 2011 Dr. Aníbal Guilhermo Armién, from the University of Minnesota / USA, spent a week with PPGSAAM professors and students and this partnership enabled the elaboration and approval of a project in the CNPq Universal Edital in 2013 and the publication of two A2 articles.
In 2015, Dr. Eva Pulpillo Sierra, from the Instituto Universitario de Sanidad Animal (IUSA) at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), Spain, was at PPGSAAM. During her stay the researcher carried out field research together with professors and students of PPGSAAM and gave a lecture to undergraduate and graduate students. This partnership resulted in the development of a dissertation for a scientific publication in B1 magazine.
In 2018, two proposals were approved by PACI and made possible the arrival of researchers Dr. Robert K. Bonde from the University of Florida / United States of America and Dr. Sergio Eli Recuenco Cabrera, from the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos / Peru. Dr. Robert K. Bond gave a lecture at PPGSAAM, on the Campus of Guamá / UFPA and at the Emilio Goeldi Museum for undergraduate and graduate students. A field trip to Marajó Island was carried out with PPGSAAM teachers and students to manage a manatee in captivity, and a project submitted to the 2018 Universal Notice was also prepared. The arrival of Dr. Sergio Recuenco, who has extensive experience in epidemiology of rabies transmitted by bats, allowed the design of a research project in this area with the participation of PPGSAAM teachers and students. In addition, the researcher gave a lecture to the entire academic community, where representatives of the Secretariat of Public Health of Pará (SESPA) and of the Agricultural Defense Agency of the State of Pará (ADEPARA) were also present. The researcher carried out field reconnaissance work on the Curuçá islands, the study area of the project in partnership. On this occasion, students of the Program were able to experience a field day with the teachings and observations of this researcher, which significantly contributed to the students' perception of the local reality.
Also, in 2018, a professor from PPGSAAM approved a proposal by the CAPES Program for Supporting Events (PAEV) that enabled the International Veterinary Surgery Congress to be held for the first time in the Amazon Region. This event had the logistical support of other PPGSAAM professors and students who helped with the organization. Ten international researchers gave lectures and there was an expressive participation of undergraduate and graduate students at UFPA and other HEIs from different states. Additionally, the PPGSAAM professors started a scientific partnership with national and international researchers linked to the Institute of Science and Technology for the Control of Poisoning by Plants-CNPq, resulting in the publication of two articles in 2015, in A2 and B1 magazines.
PPGSAAM also enables international exchange for foreign and Brazilian students. The Program participates in the Education and Training Alliance Program (PAEC), an initiative of the Coimbra Group of Brazilian Universities (GCUB), the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Graduate Students Program (PEC-G) ), providing a master's scholarship to foreign students. Through this exchange, two foreign students, one from Panama and the other from Ecuador, defended their dissertations in 2016 and 2018, respectively. In 2019 a student from Colombia finished her master's degree and in March a student from El Salvador joined the Program. In 2016, PPGSAAM received a scholarship quota from the Sandwich Doctorate Program Abroad (PDSE) and enabled the international exchange of three graduate students. Two of these graduate students carried out their work plan at the University of Emory-United States of America and one student carried out their plan at the University of Pisa-Italy.
